Chapter 8: Cultural Roots – Ancient paradigms

Chapter Eight, “In search of Chinese psyche - revisiting ancient paradigms”, looks at the basic concepts behind Chinese culture, Yin-yang and five determinant elements. These entities are described in simple terms, together with examples in terms of human personalities. The concepts of Celestial stems, Terrestrial branches, unique to Chinese computations yet critical to zodiac and other analysis, are dealt with in some detail.

The ancient paradigms are very much in use today, as they form part of the Chines sub-conscious. This chapter looks into the theory of yin and yang, together with examples of their interplay and some practical implications.

Another ancient concept, the "five determinant elements" is discussed, looking at the "entity" of wood, fire, metal, water and earth. Examples of its application in personality profiling are given.

Harmony in nature is achieved by balance of forces, through the simultaneous mechanism of control and generation. In this way the elements are always kept in balance.

The chapter ends with a discussion of the third paradigm, the "Celestial stems and Terrestrial Branches". These are extensively used in analysis of life destiny, divination, etc, as described in the following chapters.
